François Prijt – A legend in both demoscene and hardcore music
François Prijt (1972 – 2025) was a pioneering figure who bridged the gap between the Commodore 64 demoscene and the explosive hardcore gabber movement of the 1990s. Known in the demoscene as a talented SID musician and later achieving global recognition as DJ Chosen Few, his career spanned four decades of electronic music innovation.
François began his journey in 1987 at just 15 years old, experimenting on the Commodore 64. What started as curiosity in hacking and phreaking quickly evolved into a deep fascination with the SID chip’s musical possibilities. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, he had become deeply embedded in the C64 demoscene, working as a coder, graphician, musician, and swapper across multiple influential groups including Audial Arts, Flash Inc., and Hitmen.
His transition from the demoscene to hardcore music was seamless, leveraging the technical precision he developed during his C64 years. As DJ Chosen Few, François became a pioneer in the hardcore/gabber scene, releasing over 70 tracks on Mokum Records alone and performing at legendary events like Thunderdome, Mayday, and Hellraiser across the globe.
François’s unique background in SID chip composition shaped his approach to sampling, synthesis, and sound design, giving his hardcore tracks a distinctive edge that helped define the genre. His enduring anthem “Name of the DJ” became a worldwide gabber classic, cementing his legacy in electronic music history.
